HC Deb 29 July 1988 vol 138 c755W
Mr. Neil Hamilton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prosecutions have ensued as a result of the failure to wear seat belts in motor vehicles, since it was made compulsory to do so; and how many fines for this offence are currently outstanding in England and Wales.

Mr. John Patten

Information on proceedings, findings of guilt and types of sentence imposed at magistrates' courts for offences of driving or riding in a motor vehicle not wearing a seat belt and of driving a motor vehicle with a child in the front not wearing a seat belt is published annually in "Offences Relating to Motor Vehicles England and Wales, Supplementary Tables" (table 5 of the issue for 1986), copies of which are in the Library. Figures for 1987 will be published later this year. Information on the number or amount of fines outstanding for these specific offences is not collected centrally.
