HC Deb 29 July 1988 vol 138 cc762-3W
Mr. John Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total number of prisoners currently held on remand, including those prisoners held in police cells; and what proportion this represents of the total prison population.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

On 30 June 1988 there were about 10,800 untried and convicted unsentenced prisoners in prison department establishments in England and Wales. A further 724 prisoners, most of whom would have been on remand, were held in police cells. Including those in police cells, the remand population was about 23 per cent, of the prison population.

Mr. John Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of prisoners held on remand during the latest available year who were subsequently at trial(a) found innocent and (b) found guilty but not sentenced to a term of imprisonment; and what proportion these figures represent of the total number of prisoners held on remand that year.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The latest available information is given in the following table, updating the information published in table 2.2 of "Prison Statistics, England and Wales 1986" (Cm. 210), copies of which are in the Library.
