HC Deb 29 July 1988 vol 138 cc764-5W
Mr. Amess

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of motorway have been repaired for each of the last five years; at what cost; and if he will list the number of miles by motorway and express the figures as a percentage of the total number of miles for each motorway.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The table shows the miles of motorway planned for renewal in each of the years from 1984–85 to 1987–88, and the percentages which these are of the length maintained. Costs for major maintenance are also given (outturn for 1984–85 and 1985–86 and allocated total figures for 1986–87 and 1987–88). Information for 1983–84 is not readily available.

Renewal is generally associated with major maintenance schemes. Other maintenance work is also carried out on motorways. For 1987–88 £34 million was allocated to such work.
