§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe table shows the miles of motorway planned for renewal in each of the years from 1984–85 to 1987–88, and the percentages which these are of the length maintained. Costs for major maintenance are also given (outturn for 1984–85 and 1985–86 and allocated total figures for 1986–87 and 1987–88). Information for 1983–84 is not readily available.
Renewal is generally associated with major maintenance schemes. Other maintenance work is also carried out on motorways. For 1987–88 £34 million was allocated to such work.
