HC Deb 29 July 1988 vol 138 cc766-7W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the auxiliary coastguards hours allocation for(a) training and (b) patrol and other duties for each sector in the Swansea region of the coastguard service in 1985–86, 1986–87, 1987–88 and 1988–89, together with the reasons for any variations in the hours allocated; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Portillo

It has not been possible to analyse figures satisfactorily before 1987–88 as requested but totals are provided.

Refinements in projecting the requirement for auxiliary hours, various reorganisations and changes in numbers borne, prevent absolute comparisons being made between the years specified.

The allocations for 1988–89 have been based on the actual outturn for 1987–88, allowing for anticipated changes. It will be seen that the latter figures differ, in some cases markedly, from the allocations originally made for that year for the reasons given.

It will be seen that the total planned usage of auxiliaries in the Swansea region for 1988–89 is almost identical to the outturn for the previous year.

Most sectors are expected to maintain or increase the hours devoted to training, which are closely related to the
