Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give(a) the date of commencement of works on the phased array radar to be built at Fylingdales, (b) the expected date of completion of these works and (c) the expected date of start of operations of the phased array radar at Fylingdales.

Mr. Freeman

On present plans work on the modernisation of the ballistic missile early warning system at RAF Fylingdales should start on site in mid 1989 and finish in mid 1991. The modernised radar should be operational by autumn 1992.

Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what unit of United States Space Command is responsible for collating the information obtained by the Fylingdales ballistic missile early warning station in its role as part of the space surveillance network.

Mr. Hamilton

Collation of this information is carried out in the space surveillance centre at Cheyenne Mountain air force station, Colorado Springs, a unit of United States Space Command.
