HC Deb 29 July 1988 vol 138 c626W
Mr. Tom Clarke

To ask the Prime Minister which Department will be responsible for(a) social services, (b) disability and (c) children; and if she will make it her policy that the titles of the new Departments of state reflect these as responsibilities.

The Prime Minister

Responsibility for the personal social services at central Government level falls to the Secretary of State for Health. Health care and personal social services for children, and those for people with a disability are matters for him. Benefits for all client groups are the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Social Security. The Minister for Social Security and the Disabled exercises the Department's responsibility for the co-ordination of Government policies concerning disabled people. The two Departments will be known as the Department of Social Security and the Department of Health.
