Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis on the arrival of General Evren on 12 July giving (i) the total cost of policing the event, (ii) the number of officers involved and (iii) the number of persons arrested or held by the police.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

[holding answer 18 July 1988]: I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the additional costs of policing the arrival of General Evren amounted to about £25,000; 1,981 police officers were assigned to duties in connection with the event, and 10 arrests were made.
