HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 cc495-6W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people make up the 1 per cent, of taxpayers who pay the most tax; and at what level of income does this 1 per cent, begin.

Mr. Norman Lamont

It is estimated that in 1988–89 the top 1 per cent, of income tax payers comprises 210,000 single people and married couples, each with total income of at least £50,000.

Mr. Allen

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people in the tax district which serves Nottingham are in the top 1 per cent, of taxpayers.

Mr. Norman Lamont

A tax district serves the residents of a number of places, according to who is their employer. Information about the amount of income tax payable is not compiled for smaller areas of residence than counties.
