§ Mr. Austin MitchellTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will publish in theOfficial Report a table showing for an employee on (a) average earnings and (b) 10 times average earnings the marginal rate of income tax and national insurance contributions.
§ Mr. Norman Lamont[holding answer 25 July 1988]: The table shows the marginal rate of income tax and NIC of a married man on (a) average earnings and (b) 10 times average earnings under the 1988–89 tax and NIC regimes. The calculations assume that the man's earnings are his only source of income and that he has no reliefs or allowances other than the married man's allowance. Average earnings are those for full-time males paid at adult rates whose pay is unaffected by absence and are estimated at £244.70 per week in 1988–89.
