HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 c480W
Mr. George

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how much has been spent by his Department in each of the past five years on social science research; what percentage this constitutes of total departmental expenditure and of the Department's research budget; and how much of the research has been undertaken(a) within his Department, (b) by universities and polytechnics and (c) by independent research organisations.

Mr. Lee

The figures in the table are for the Department of Employment group (which includes for this period the Department of Employment, the Training Commission, formerly the Manpower Services Commission, and the Health and Safety Executive), and are based on information provided for the annual review of Government-funded research and development (the latest available figures being for 1986–87). The available information relates to gross expenditure on research and development including that performed elsewhere in central Government, for research and development in total and for social science and humanities.
