Mr. McGrady

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many people were employed as cleaners in primary, secondary and further education in Northern Ireland in each of the years from 1980–81 to 1987–88.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 27 July 1988]: The information is as follows in respect of grant-aided controlled and maintained schools (including nursery and special schools):

Cleaners
1980–81 5,313
1981–82 5,155
1982–83 5,194
1983–84 5,257
1984–85 5,262
1985–86 5,188
1986–87 4,984
1987–88 5,072

At present some 78 per cent, of cleaning staff' are employed on a part-time basis.

A breakdown of these figures on a sectoral basis is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. The figures also exclude voluntary grammar schools for which such information is not held centrally.
