§ Mr. SalmondTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many cases of culpable homicide were prosecuted under sections 1, 2 and 3 of the Road Traffic Act in 1987.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonIn 1987, 30 people were prosecuted under section 1 of the Road Traffic Act 1972 for causing death by reckless driving. Since, under sections 2 and 3 of the Act, the consequences of the driving do not form part of the charge, no information is available in the criminal statistics on whether or not charges under these sections arose out of an incident in which a death occurred. However, cases of reckless driving involving a death are almost invariably prosecuted under section 1 rather than section 2 or 3.
§ Mr. SalmondTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list in theOfficial Report the number of (a) fatalities and (b) serious injuries caused by road traffic accidents in (i) each regional authority, (ii) each district authority and (iii) each parliamentary constituency in Scotland for the years 1985, 1986 and 1987.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonThe information requested for 1985 and 1986 is included at tables 23 and 26 of "Road Accidents Scotland", for 1985 and 1986 respectively, copies of which are available in the Library. The figures for 1987 are as follows:
