§ Mr. Nicholas BennettTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many industrial or commercial companies have made representations to him concerning their possible purchase or use of the site of royal naval arms depot Milford Haven.
§ Mr. FreemanThere has been one inquiry of which my hon. Friend will already be aware.
§ Mr. Nicholas BennettTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give his estimate of the cost of(a) removing the explosive impregnation from the site of royal naval arms depot Milford and (b) of removing all existing buildings from the site in order that it might be available for industrial or commercial use.
§ Mr. FreemanThe estimated cost of(a) certifying RNAD Milford Haven free from explosives is estimated at between £500,000 and £1 million and (b) no estimate of the cost of removing all existing buildings has been made, nor is one considered necessary at this stage, as the future of the site has still to be decided.
§ Mr. Nicholas BennettTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what other defence uses for the Milford Haven royal naval arms depot have been considered.
§ Mr. FreemanThere is no naval requirement for RNAD Milford Haven. The Army and Royal Air Force have no present need of extra storage space and no other defence uses have been identified, as yet, which are considered to be feasible.
§ Mr. Nicholas BennettTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what non-defence uses by other Departments for the Milford Haven royal naval arms depot have been invited and considered.
§ Mr. FreemanIt would be inappropriate at this stage to invite other Government Departments to consider alternative uses for the RNAD Milford Haven site. If no futher use is found for it, our normal practice would be to offer the site for sale on the open market. I will ensure that there is full consultation with the Welsh Office and public authorities.
