To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proportion of Her Majesty's prison officers have refused to fill in ethnic survey forms; and if he will make a statement.

At 1 May 1988, the latest figures available, about 70 per cent, of prison service unified grades VI to VIII has not responded to ethnic surveys. A further questionnaire will be sent shortly to those who have not responded. This has been publicised in office notices and in the "Prison Service News".
