HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 c415W
Mrs. Mahon

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) if he will make representations to the United States Government concerning the implications for the possibility of a peaceful settlement in Nicaragua of the Administration's policy of support for the contras while that organisation remains committed to the use of violence; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if he will make representations to the United States administration urging them not to resume lethal aid to the contras in Nicaragua.

Mrs. Chalker

We have regular discussions with the United States administration on a wide range of issues including Central America. They are well aware of our support for a peaceful negotiated solution to the region's problems.

Mrs. Mahon

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the United States Administration urging them to remove economic sanctions against Nicaragua.

Mrs. Chalker

United States economic policy towards Nicaragua is a matter for the two Governments concerned. We have normal economic relations with Nicaragua.
