HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 cc613-4W
Mr. Amess

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of new motorway are proposed up to December 1989; what are the estimated costs involved; how many miles of motorway are expected to be repaired by December 1989; what is the cost involved; and if he will list the number of miles and cost per motorway.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Sixteen miles of new motorway are under construction and expected to be open by December 1989, at a total cost of £96 million. They are:

Scheme Length Cost
miles £ million
M40 Oxford-Birmingham (Warwick section) 11.0 52.0
M63/M66 Portwood-Denton 5.0 44.4

The following new motoway is under construction:

Scheme Length Cost

M40 Oxford-Birmingham (Banbury bypass) 27.6 141.9

Seven motorway widening schemes are also expected to be completed by the end of December 1989, widening 24.6 miles at a cost of £103.6 million.

Our plans have been to renew 80 miles of motorway in each of the years 1988–89 and 1989–90, at a cost of £102 million in 1988–89. We are considering the effect of the rephasing of capital maintenance works announced in my answer to my hon. Friend the Member for Hornchurch (Mr. Squire) on 20 June.

The figures for individual motorways in the original programme of major renewal schemes for 1988–89 are set out in the table; minor schemes are not included. The programme for 1989–90 has not yet been drawn up.
