HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 c419W
Mr. Grocott

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department in the latest year for which figures are available, how many people were convicted of driving with excess levels of alcohol; and in how many cases this was a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth or, seventh or more than seventh conviction.

Mr. John Patten

In 1986, out of a total of about 107,100 findings of guilt for offences of driving and so on after consuming alcohol or taking drugs, 87,600 offences were of driving with alcohol in the blood, breath or urine above the prescribed limit. This information is published in table 5 of "Offences Relating To Motor Vehicles, England and Wales 1986, Supplementary Tables", copies of which are in the Library. The figure for 1987 will be published later this year. Information on previous convictions of these offenders is not available centrally.
