HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 cc576-7W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many vehicles are owned by his Department and by each branch of the armed forces; and how many of these have been converted to run on unleaded petrol.

Mr. Freeman

The Ministry of Defence owns 87,500 vehicles which are allocated as follows:

Vehicles
Royal Navy 3,000
Army 58,000
Royal Air Force 10,000
Procurement Executive 2,000
Held in vehicle storage depots 14,500

A significant proportion of the current stock runs on diesel fuel, but it is not possible to provide the precise number without disproportionate effort. Other vehicles in the current stock which cannot run on unleaded petrol will not be specifically converted, but, as and when they need to be replaced, they will be replaced whenever possible by vehicles which run on either diesel or unleaded petrol.
