HC Deb 28 July 1988 vol 138 cc454-5W
Mr. George

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how much has been spent by his Department in each of the past five years on the evaluation of departmental programmes; and what proportion this constitutes of (a) the amount allocated for evaluation and (b) the Department's total budget.

Mr. Rifkind

Evaluation is an integral part of the process of managing programmes. It is therefore not possible to identify separately the resources involved.

1. The figures shown are for current expenditure only. Information on capital expenditure by local authorities cannot be split between primary and secondary.

2. The outturn figures have been revalued to 1987–88 prices by application of the GDP deflator.

3. The 1987–88 outturn figures are estimated. For other years actual outturn figures have been given.

4. The central Government expenditure relates mainly to the assisted places scheme and in earlier years to assistance to grant-aided schools.

Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give an estimate of the amount of finance given to local authority secondary education section in Scotland by industry and commerce in each of the years 1979 to 1987, inclusive.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

I regret that this information is not available.

Mr. McLeish
