Ms. Richardson

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the numbers of conceptions in 1987 which(a) led to maternities and (b) were terminated under the terms of the Abortion Act 1967, among residents of England and Wales aged under 14 years, 15 years, 16 years, 17 years, 18 years and 19 years, giving in each case the rate per 1,000 population in each age group.

The estimated number of conceptions in the calendar year 1987 will be derived from the births and legal abortions data for 1988, which are not yet available. The following table gives the latest available information, which is for the estimated number of conceptions occurring during the year 1986. A commentary on these statistics, together with details of the definitions and methods of estimation, will be included in the next issue of Population Trends to be published in September.
