Mr. Robert G. HughesTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether accident investigation and prevention techniques are being used to reduce casualties on trunk roads in London; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyIn 1987–88, using systematic AIP analysis, the Department identified over 100 sites on trunk roads in London where casualties could be reduced by low-cost engineering solutions. It is now organising remedial measures, including anti-skid surfacing, new or improved signs and road markings, better lighting and different signal timings. The estimated first year rate of return for the first 100 sites is 312 per cent.: an estimated reduction of 325 casualties every year.
251WThe systematic AIP approach reveals the common factors in accidents at a location. It also provides a flow of work suitable for bulk purchase contracts.
Last year the savings on such a contract for anti-skid surfacing were approximately £300,000 and effectively halved the cost of treating each site.
