HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 cc287-8W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what changes and extensions to current emergency evacuation plans for British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. at Sellafield nuclear complex will be necessitated by the plan announced by British Nuclear Fuels plc, on 13 July, to make Sellafield a package tour centre;

(2) whether the plans announced by British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. on 13 July to encourage a further influx of tourists to Sellafield have any implications for advice given by his Department on coping with evacuations under civil emergencies, particularly regarding accidents at nuclear installations.

Mr. Michael Spicer

It is for the operator of a nuclear site to satisfy the Health and Safety Executive's nuclear installations inspectorate of the adequacy of its emergency arrangements, as part of the licensing procedures. Such plans take account of the population densities and distribution within the detailed planning zone.
