HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 c342W
Mr. McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what measures he proposes to take to ensure proper protection for private tenants offered temporary rehousing while works are carried out to their homes.

Mr. Trippier

Under sections 214 and 215 of the Housing Act 1985 a local authority may not serve an improvement notice until it is satisfied that the housing arrangements for affected occupants are satisfactory. Otherwise, it is for private tenants who are offered temporary rehousing while works are carried out to their homes to negotiate with their landlords to preserve their rights. We have amended the Housing Bill so that existing protected tenants who are rehoused by their landlords will continue to have protected tenancies.
