HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 cc289-90W
Mr. Strang

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy how many organisations and individuals have submitted comments on the draft document "The Tolerability of Risk from Nuclear Power Stations"; and when he expects a response to be made to these comments.

Mr. Parkinson

Twenty four organisations and individuals have sent comments to the Health and Safety Commission. The commission has also received advice from the advisory committee on the safety of nuclear installations. The chairman of the commission wrote to my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and to me on 26 July setting out the commission's response, and a copy of this letter has been placed in the Library of the House. The commission agrees with ACSNI's view that the levels of risk proposed for new power stations should be tolerable for the present and proposed PWR programme, provided that strict and comprehensive systems of regulation continue in force. I understand that the commission is arranging for publication of all comments in due course.
