HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 cc288-9W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what are the financial and future safety implications of the discovery of corrosion faults during the recent statutory annual safety overhaul of the Central Electricity Generating Board Magnox reactors at Dungeness.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The statutory inspection of reactor 2 at Dungeness A station is still in progress and has revealed some corrosion damage in the reactor and boilers. The full extent of these problems and their safety significance are being assessed. It is too early to estimate the financial implications from the loss of generation but every effort is being made to return the reactor to service as soon as possible, subject to the agreement of the station's nuclear safety committee and the consent of the Health and Safety Executive's nuclear installations inspectorate.
