To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proportion of complaints about low flying received in 1987 were made initially to RAF air bases and other military-installations as opposed to his Department.

The information requested could not be provided without disproportionate effort.

Mr. Ingram

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) during which hours of the day low flying at 100 ft above the ground is permitted in the Borders tactical training area;

(2) if flying at 100 ft is; permitted in the vicinity of (a) Chapelton, (b) Caldermill, (c) Drumclog and (d) Auldhouse, Strathclyde;

(3) what consultations have been held with (a) East Kilbride district council and (b) Strathclyde regional council prior to the establishment of low flying at 100 ft in the constituency of East Kilbride;

(4) if the use of afterburners is permitted by aircraft flying at 100 ft above the ground;

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what research is being conducted by his Department on the medical effects of exposure to the noise levels associated with military jet aircraft flying at 100 ft off the ground.

Mr. Freeman

The MOD is represented on the NATO working group and will also attend a major international meeting on aircraft noise in Stockholm this summer.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what recent representations he has received concerning low-flying military exercises in Wales.

Mr. Freeman

During June 1988 the Ministry of Defence received 86 inquiries or complaints from Wales about low-flying military aircraft.
