§ Mr. Andrew WelshTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will indicate total value of grants made by his Department to chess associations in England and Wales in each of the last five years; and what he expects it to be in current financial year.
Mr. JacksonThe Department of Education and Science pays grant to the British Chess Federation to assist with its administrative costs and with expenditure incurred in participating in international competitions. The total grants made in the last five financial years are as follows:
£ 1983–84 31,123 1984–85 27,256 1985–86 31,492 1986–87 35,273 1987–88 36,349 The grant allocation for the current financial year is £37,300.
