Mr. Colvin

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the recently announced arms deal between the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Younger

The recently announced signature of a formal understanding with the Saudi Arabian Government provides for an enhancement to the project Al Yamamah involving the supply of additional aircraft, specialised naval vessels and a construction programme. I believe the agreement is of considerable importance and benefit to both countries.

24. Mr. John M. Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give details of the implications for west midlands industry of the recent major arms contracts with Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Sainsbury

Employment consequences for individual regions cannot yet be assessed, but it is clearly excellent news for British industry and has the potential to help support and sustain jobs in a wide range of companies and regions.
