HC Deb 26 July 1988 vol 138 cc210-1W
Mr. Fearn

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the number in each region of(a) hospital beds, (b) local authority and health authority day places, and (c) places in sheltered accommodation, for (1) the mentally handicapped (2) mentally ill and (3) elderly patients.

Mrs. Currie

Figures for 1986, the latest year for which statistics are readily available centrally, have been published and are in the Library.

Figures for the number of available staffed beds at 31 December 1986 in National Health Service mental illness and mental handicap hospitals and units in England are in table 2.1 of booklets 9 and 10 respectively of the series, "Mental Health Statistics for England".

The table gives the estimated average number of daily occupied beds during 1985 for the elderly in National Health Service non-psychiatric hospitals in England; later estimates for the elderly are not currently available.

Figures for day patients, other than out-patients, attending National Health Service mental illness and mental handicap facilities in England during 1986 are also contained in the two booklets mentioned.

Figures for people attending day centres within local authorities are contained in the Departments publication A/F 86/8, "Adult Training Centres for Mentally Handicapped People and Day Centres for Mentally Ill, Elderly and Younger Physically Handicapped People, at 31 March 1986, England", by local authority area.

Figures on "sheltered accommodation" are not centrally available by regional health authority. However, figures by local authority area are available for certain categories of accommodation in publications A/F 86/11, "Homes and Hostels for Mentally Ill and Mentally Handicapped People, at 31st March 1986, England", and RA/86/2, "Residential Accommodation for Elderly and for Younger Physically Handicapped People: All Residents in Local Authority, Voluntary and Private Homes, Year ending 31 March 1986, England".

No reliable figures for day patients attending other National Health Service facilities specifically for the elderly are collected centrally.
