HC Deb 26 July 1988 vol 138 cc174-5W
Mr. Shersby

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what information he has concerning a campaign by the Food and Drink Federation to educate the public about ways to avoid food poisoning by improving domestic hygiene; whether the campaign has the support of his Department; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

I have been asked to reply.

The Food and Drink Federation's campaign is a very welcome initiative by the food industry to help people improve food hygiene in their houses and kitchens. It has the support of both the Department and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

This initiative complements the pilot phase of a separate food hygiene education campaign run jointly by the Department, MAFF and the Health Education Authority. The results of this pilot phase will be used to decide how future phases, in 1989 and beyond, can best inform and educate the general public about good food hygiene practice. Copies of the FDF booklet and our pilot leaflet have been placed in the Library, together with a MAFF report "Food Hygiene—Report on a Consumer Survey" used in the preparation of the leaflet.
