HL Deb 26 July 1988 vol 500 cc245-6WA
Lord Melchett

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have any evidence that United Kingdom manufacturers have difficulty in manufacturing small cars for export to the United States of America which meet the exhaust emission standards for small cars which apply in the United States of America; and if so, whether they will state what these difficulties are.

The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (Lord Young of Graffham)

Very few small cars are exported from the United Kingdom to the United States of America: 57 cars below 1..5 litres in 1987. There are many reasons for this but one of the factors is the cost of meeting US regulatory standards including those on exhaust emissions.
