HC Deb 26 July 1988 vol 138 c231W
Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what information is available to those currently engaged in chemical warfare research on the extent and implications of Japanese research programmes into bacteriological warfare using prisoners of war during the war of 1941 to 1945.

Mr. Freeman

Those engaged in chemical defence research have access to all such information held by the Government.

Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will set up an inquiry into the alleged use by the Japanese of prisoners of war for research programmes into bacteriological warfare during the war of 1941 to 1945.

Mr. Freeman

Allegations that British prisoners of war held by the Japanese were used in bacteriological warfare experiments between 1941 and 1945 have been the subject of lengthy and exhaustive investigation. No evidence to substantiate them has been found and there are therefore no plans to institute a further inquiry.
