Mr. Tom Clarke

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish a table in theOfficial Report, showing for each year from 1979 to the latest year for which figures are available, the number of school leavers with special education needs who left school, broken down by type of institution, and the numbers who went into (a) employment, (b) education, (c) training, (d) care and (e) who cannot be traced.

Only limited information is available. The estimated number of pupils aged 16 who left maintained and non-maintained special schools in England in each of the years 1981 to 1987 is as in the table. Comparable figures for earlier years are not available. Information for other types of institution attended aond on the destination of leavers from special schools is not collected centrally.
