To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to monitor the effect of pollution and the greenhouse effect on water levels in the Thames.

The Thames water authority operates a network of eight tidal gauges to monitor the level of sea water in the Thames estuary. There is a chain of such gauges around the coast of the United Kingdom.

The Department has initiated a research programme into the greenhouse effect which will consider, amongst other things, the impact of any rise in sea level.
