HC Deb 25 July 1988 vol 138 c47W
Mr. Tom Clarke

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received regarding "Charter 87: A Charter for Refugees"; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Renton

Representatives of Charter 87 have corresponded extensively with me and officials. I met a delegation in March. A number of hon. Members have also written on their behalf. Many of the points in the charter are in line with the Governments present policy and practice. Our main disagreement is with the proposal of a full, in-country right of appeal for all asylum applicants at ports. We remain convinced that this would lead to increased abuse of the asylum process.
