Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the specific projects in which the United Kingdom or the European Community are taking part in order to protect the rain forests in(a) Brazil, (b) Cameroon, (c) Ghana, (d) Ivory Coast, (e) Malaysia and (f) other Asian, African or Latin American countries.

Bilateral projects in the countries listed are:

Brazil

  • Rain forest regeneration study on Maraca Island.

Cameroon

  • Rehabilitation of Limbe botanical garden as a centre for conservation of rain forest species.

  • Support for Korup national rain forest park.
  • Research into ectomycorrhizas in nutrient cycling and forest dynamics in lowland tropical rain forest

Ghana

  • Inventory of forest reserves and preparation of management plans.

Ivory Coast

  • Commonwealth Development Corporation loans for the establishment and replanting of tropical hardwood plantations which relieve pressure on natural forests.

Malaysia

  • No bilateral projects.

Other Countries:

Belize

  • Technical assistance for the forestry sector review under the tropical forestry action plan.

Costa Rica

  • Tropical moist forest management research.

Honduras

  • Technical assistance in broadleaf forest management

Nigeria

  • Oban national park, assistance in tropical moist forest conservation

Sierra Leone

  • Research in the management of tropical moist forest conservation
