§ Ms. HarmanTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list, for each district health authority in England, the number of people nursed by the district nursing service per 1,000 of the population.
§ Mr. Newton[holding answer 14 July 1988]: The information for 1986 is given in the table.
It should be noted that part of the variation in the figures is due to differences in demand due for example to the proportion of elderly people in the population. (Around half of patients seen by district nurses are aged 65 140W or over). Also some health authorities use district nurses to provide a service in health centres and on GPs' premises, which of course produces a markedly higher contact rate than is possible if the same staff are used primarily for home visiting.
