To ask the Minister for the Arts what encouragement is being given by his Department to further Anglo-Chinese cultural exchanges.

Mr. Luce

Mr. Wang Meng, the Chinese Minister for Culture, recently visited this country, and we had useful discussions. However, cultural exchanges with China are primarily a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Foreign Secretary and the British Council, who have negotiated a new cultural exchange programme for 1988–90, which was signed in Peking in April of this year.
