HC Deb 22 July 1988 vol 137 c843W
Sir Bernard Braine

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has received a report from the Anglian water authority regarding the effect of the extension of the Southend on Sea sewage outfall in the quality of river water generally; and which river has seen any increase in levels of pollution off Canvey Island's beaches.

Mr. Moynihan

Anglian water authority submitted to the Department in 1986 a consultant's report describing the effects of the Southend outfall extension on water quality, as part of its application under the Control of Pollution Act for discharge consent. The studies which were carried out showed that the waters at the eastern end of Canvey Island would not be significantly affected by extending the outfall. However, Anglian water authority has undertaken to monitor the effects on Canvey beach of extending the outfall and will make the results available to the local authority.

Sir Bernard Braine

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will detail the arrangements for continuous monitoring of all sewage outfalls and beaches in the Thames estuary.

Mr. Moynihan

The arrangements for continuous monitoring of all sewage outfalls and bathing waters in the Thames estuary are matters for the respective water authorities. Records are not kept centrally, but the individual results are available through the public registers.
