To ask the Secretary of State for Transport by what date he plans the existing backlog in motorway and trunk road renewal to be eliminated.

Our aim has been 1992. We will consider the effect of rephasing capital maintenance works.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he will complete his current review of the national road construction and maintenance programme.

We shall be keeping the programme under review throughout the year.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if, on completion of his review of the national road construction and maintenance programme, he will publish a revised programme of work for both new construction and maintenance work for 1988–89.

We shall be keeping the programme under review throughout the year. For new construction, our aim remains to start all planned schemes which are ready.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he intends publishing a programme of new construction and maintenance work to be carried out on the motorway and trunk road network in 1989–90.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if, in the light of his review of the national road construction and maintenance programme, he intends to maintain the commitment set out in his announcement of 22 March that 80 miles of motorway and over 200 miles of trunk roads will be renewed in 1988–89.
