§ Ms. WalleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what is the total number of working hours spent by each regional health authority director of maternity services on fund raising or income generation;
(2)what is the number of maternity staff involved in fund raising or income generation; and how many hours maternity service staff have spent on fund raising in each district health authority;
(3)how much of his total budget he expects to be spent on seminar and study days for maternity staff; and by how much each district health authority is having to supplement its allocation for this purpose by money raised through its own fund raising and income generation.
§ Mrs. CurrieI regret that the information requested is not available. We have advised health authorities that income-generation activities should not interfere with their duty to provide services under the National Health Service Act 1977, and we intend that they should ensure that there is no unnecessary diversion of management or staff time. Levels of spending on seminars and study days are a matter for individual health authorities from within their general allocations.
