§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonIn Scotland the authorities responsible for collection and disposal of household waste are the 53 district and three islands councils. Forty-three authorities, just over three-quarters, last year undertook some separation of waste into one or more components for recycling. Thirty-seven authorities separated out glass, 10 separated out metal and 28 separated out paper. Information is not held centrally on whether these components originated from domestic or commercial waste streams nor on whether there is any separation of plastic.
