To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many individuals were convicted of violent crime during 1987; and what was the equivalent figure 10 years earlier.

Mr. John Patten

In 1987, 47,900 persons were convicted of offences of violence against the person, 6,200 of sexual offences and 4,400 of robbery. Corresponding figures for the previous 10 years can be found in table 5.8 of "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales 1986" (Cm. 233), copies of which are in the Library.
