HC Deb 21 July 1988 vol 137 c761W
Mr. Wheeler

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, for each of the nine inner London petty sessional divisions, how many cases of unpaid fines still await collection; and at what time point unpaid fines are written off as uncollectable.

Mr. John Patten

[pursuant to his reply, 13 July 1988, c. 222]: At 30 June 1988, the position was as follows:

Number
South Westminster 14,107
North Westminster 10,958
West London 10,005
West Central 11,005
East Central 14,807
Thames 5,031
South Western 15,211
South Central 21,630
South Eastern 10,089

In addition, there were 520 cases of unpaid fines at the inner London juvenile court, and 220,882 cases of unpaid fixed penalty fines at the central processing unit. An unidentifiable number of these cases consist of fines in which the time allowed for payment has not expired. Fines are written off only after all appropriate enforcement action has been taken. There is no set time limit.
