§ Mr. DobsonTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list for 1979, 1984 and the most recent year the numbers of staff by grade in the statistical divisions in his Department; and if he will differentiate between staff in the statistical posts and staff in administrative posts.
§ Mr. SainsburyThe staff complements by grade in Ministry of Defence statistical divisions for the years in question are as follows:

A direct comparison between the figures quoted for 1979 and 1984 and the 1988 figures is not possible because a reorganisation in the defence statistical organisation took place in 1985. Prior to that date all defence statistical branches reported to a single Under-Secretary, whereas they are now integrated into a number of different areas within the Ministry of Defence.
