HC Deb 21 July 1988 vol 137 cc812-3W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list what information he has on the countries in which the destruction of rain forests is still allowed and taking place.

Mr. Moynihan

The Department does not hold details of the depletion of rain forests in individual countries. The Government share the worldwide concern caused by unsustainable exploitation of these forests and actively supports international initiatives to reverse their decline. During the recent meeting of the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) the United Kingdom delegation was instrumental in getting agreement that the ITTO should give priority to encouraging the development of national policies aimed at sustainable forest management.
