To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if will give the reasons for delaying the start of work on some of the motorway reconstruction projects announced on 22 March,Official Report, column 61; if he will list those schemes announced then on which tenders have not yet been invited; if he will list those schemes announced then on what tenders have been invited but contracts not yet issued; and if he will estimate the backlog of motorway reconstruction that will be outstanding on 31 March 1989.

The general situation was explained in answer to a question by my hon. Friend on 20 June 1988, at column 455. The reasons for delaying some capital maintenance works is the need to keep spending on the road programme as a whole within financial provision. We are currently reviewing what further works can go ahead in this financial year. Pending completion of the review it is not possible to estimate the implication of the delay for the backlog of motorway renewals.

The following are the details sought of individual schemes:
