HC Deb 21 July 1988 vol 137 cc722-3W
Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what were the exact circumstances, including time and location, of the collision between the Dalriada and HMS Conqueror, on 2 July; what damage was sustained by both vessels; what injuries were sustained by the crew of the Dalriada; what other ships were in the area at the time; what services were involved in the rescue; what kind of inquiry he has instituted into the incident; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ian Stewart

At 0113 on 2 July 1988 a collision occured about 11 nautical miles south of the Mull of Kintyre light between the periscope of the submarine, HMS Conqueror, and the yacht Dalriada, owned by the Army Sail Training Association. Dalriada sustained damage to her side and sank shortly after the collision. HMS Conqueror was undamaged and surfaced immediately after the collision. Dalriada's mayday signal was acknowledged by the frigate, HMS Battleaxe, which was some 5 nautical miles from the collision. She proceeded at once to Dalriada's assistance and recovered her four crew members, who were uninjured. They were subsequently transferred to the Donaghadee lifeboat, from which they were landed at Larne. A formal naval board of inquiry was convened on 2 July to establish the full circumstances of the collision.
