To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what was the total spending by his Department on press, public relations and advertising, respectively, in 1987–88;

(2) what is the latest figure for the estimated spending in 1988–89 by his Department on (a) television advertising, (b) radio advertising, (c) newspaper advertising and (d) other promotional material;

(3) what is the latest figure for the estimated expenditure by his Department on press and public relations during 1988–89;

(4) what is the latest figure for the number of staff presently employed in the press and public relations office of his Department.

My Department has no section which can be separately identified as public relations. Functions which are commonly associated with public relations are carried out by the Department's information division.

On 1 July 1988 Information Division had the following staff in post:
