HC Deb 20 July 1988 vol 137 c597W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will review his policy concerning the imposition of value added tax on headstones for graves; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lilley

[holding answer 18 July 1988]: This aspect of VAT has been reviewed on a number of occasions. My right hon. Friend has no plans for changes in this policy.

Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what is the estimated revenue in real terms from value added tax on headstones of graves in the United Kingdom for each of the years from 1979; and if he will make a statement;

(2) how many headstones for graves had value added tax levied in each of the years from 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lilley

[holding answer 18 July 1988]: There are no official figures available either of the numbers of gravestones sold each year or of the yield in value added tax from their sale.
